Time available at the Tower

Historic Royal Palaces recommends at least two hours; three to four hours to see most of it without rushing.

Visit date (optional)

Why it matters: weekends and Easter to October are busier, so queue allowances change; Sunday and Monday tours start later (10:45); the Opening Ceremony ticket runs on set dates.

Roughly when will you arrive? (optional)

Why it matters: the last Yeoman Warder tour is at 15:15 and last entry was 16:30 when we checked; the Crown Jewels queue is shortest first thing and after 15:00.

Children's ages

Used for pacing and to keep frightening stories out of the plan. Under-fives are free; pushchairs cannot go up the White Tower.

Step-free inside the walls: Jewel House (Crown Jewels), with a moving walkway staff can stop; Chapel Royal via a platform lift operated by the Yeoman Warder on duty (two wheelchair users at a time); New Armouries Café (ramp). Not step-free: Battlements (wall walk); Bloody Tower; Imprisonment at the Tower exhibition (Beauchamp Tower); Upper floors of the White Tower (its lift only reaches the basement shop).
